Classical rotational inertia of solid 4He.
The observation of reduced rotational inertia in a cell containing solid 4He has been interpreted as evidence for superfluidity of the solid. We propose an alternative explanation: slippage of the solid, due to grain boundary premelting between the solid and dense adsorbed layers at the container wall. We calculate the range of film thickness, and determine the viscosity that will account for t...
متن کاملIntrinsic magnetism of grain boundaries in two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides.
Grain boundaries (GBs) are structural imperfections that typically degrade the performance of materials. Here we show that dislocations and GBs in two-dimensional (2D) metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M = Mo, W; X = S, Se) can actually improve the material by giving it a qualitatively new physical property: magnetism. The dislocations studied all display a substantial magnetic moment of ∼1 Bohr magne...
متن کاملSolid-state wetting transitions at grain boundaries
A previously developed model of the dependence of grain boundary (GB) segregation on GB character has been exercised to investigate solid-state wetting transitions at GBs, and their anisotropy. In the case of binary systems displaying a solid-state miscibility gap, it is shown that the wetting transition temperature for precipitates at a GB is anisotropic, and is inversely related to GB energy....
متن کاملTwist grain boundaries in three-dimensional lamellar Turing structures.
Steady spatial self-organization of three-dimensional chemical reaction-diffusion systems is discussed with the emphasis put on the possible defects that may alter the Turing patterns. It is shown that one of the stable defects of a three-dimensional lamellar Turing structure is a twist grain boundary embedding a Scherk minimal surface.
متن کاملTwo-dimensional nuclear inertia: Analytical relationships.
The components of the nuclear inertia tensor, functions of the separation distance R and of the radius of the light fragment R 2 , BRR(R,R2) , BRR2(R ,R2) , and BR2R2(R,R2) are calculated within the Werner-Wheeler approximation, by using the parametrization of two intersected symmetric or asymmetric spheres. Analytical relationships are derived. When projected to a path R, = R, (R) , the reduce...
